Yin is quiet and slow. Poses on the floor are held for three to five minutes, so the stretch reaches the deeper tissue around the hips, back and legs.

There is very little to do except breathe and let go. If a shape is too much, you come out early; if it is not enough, you stay. Bolsters and blankets are always within reach.

It is a good counterweight to a busy week and a good partner for a strength or heat class.

What to expect

A short settling breath at the start.

Six or seven long poses, each held in stillness.

A few quiet minutes at the end before the lights come up.

Good for

Tight hips and backs, and anyone who runs, lifts or sits all day

What to bring

Warm socks. Bolsters and blankets are provided.
